Every 1 October, the Church begins the month dedicated to the Holy Rosary, one of the most widespread and beloved Marian devotions amongst Catholics worldwide. What many people do not realise is that this tradition did not arise from a revelation or from a pope\u2019s initiative, but rather from the outcome of <\/span>a naval battle that changed the course of Europe.<\/b> Let us tell you a bit more.<\/span><\/p>\n

On 7 October 1571, the Battle of Lepanto took placein which a coalition of Christian forces, the Holy League, faced the Ottoman Empire\u2019s fleet in the waters of the Gulf of Patras, off the coast of the Greek city then known as Lepanto. Before the battle, the <\/span>the Christian soldiers entrusted themselves to the Virgin Mary by praying the Rosary, and the unexpected victory of a numerically inferior fleet was immediately attributed to her intercession.<\/b><\/p>\n

Pope Saint Pius V, a great devotee of the Rosary, then established a feast day in her honour, known initially as Our Lady of Victories and later as Our Lady of the Rosary, set for 7 October.<\/p>\n

And this is where another interesting fact lies: amongst the soldiers who fought that day at Lepanto was a young Spaniard who, years later, would go on to write one of the most important works in world literature: Miguel de Cervantes, who took part in the battle and lost the use of one of his arms as a result of the wounds he sustained, which later earned him the nickname \u2018the One-Armed Man of Lepanto\u2019. <\/p>\n

Indeed, Cervantes himself later described that confrontation as \u2018the greatest event witnessed by past centuries, by the present, and one that future centuries do not expect to witness\u2019. Beyond the anecdote, the origin of this festival reminds us of something very important about the Rosary: that it is not merely a repetitive prayer recited whilst counting beads, but, as the Dominicans themselves point out, <\/span>It is a way of \u2018praising and giving thanks to God for sending us his Son\u2019 together with Mary. <\/b><\/p>\n

Its structure, also established by Saint Pius V, consists of the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries, to which Saint John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries in 2002, providing a complete journey through the life of Jesus that turns the recitation of each mystery into a meditation on a passage from the Gospel.<\/p>\n

And so, every year, October offers us an invitation to rediscover this prayer \u2013 as simple as it is profound \u2013 with a history that links popular faith, Marian devotion and, curiously, some of the most significant chapters in European history and literature. Did you know that?<\/p>\n
