Pope Leo XIV will make his first official visit to Spain from June 6 to 12, with an itinerary that will include three significant destinations: Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. Under the slogan “Lift up your eyes”—and 15 years after the last Pope’s visit to our country—Benedict XVI on the occasion of World Youth Day 2011—the announcement has generated considerable anticipation both within the Church and in civil society, as this trip aims to reflect the country’s diversity and pastoral richness.

The Pope’s visit to Madrid will be marked by its institutional and ecclesial dimensions, with planned meetings with civil authorities, as well as with representatives of the Spanish Episcopal Conference and various pastoral leaders. In addition, the program includes, among other events, the celebration of a A massive Eucharistic celebration that will bring together thousands of faithful from across the country and abroad.

Barcelona will be another highlight of the visit, with a program focused particularly on cultural dialogue and the Church’s presence in areas such as education, youth ministry, and consecrated life. For its part, the leg of the trip in the Canary Islands will give the apostolic journey a strong social focus. Pope Leo XIV will visit the Diocese of the Canary Islands, located in the province of Las Palmas, and the Diocese of Nivariense or Tenerife, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There, he will focus on issues related to migration, poverty, and care for the most vulnerable, in line with the work the Church carries out on the islands.

This visit also stems from Pope Francis’s long-standing desire to gain a firsthand understanding of the migration situation in the Canary Islands, particularly on the island of El Hierro, which will ultimately not be part of the itinerary.
