Every 15 August, the Church joyfully celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.It is a mystery that fills the hearts of Christians with hope. This feast reminds us that Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, was taken up to heaven, body and soul, and now shares fully in the glory of her risen Son.
What is the meaning of Mary’s Assumption?
The Assumption of Mary into heaven is the fulfilment of a life given completely to God. Mary, full of grace from her conception, was preserved from sin and, at the end of her earthly life, did not know the corruption of the grave. She was glorified by the same God she bore in her womb.
This mystery, proclaimed a dogma of faith by Pope Pius XII in 1950, affirms that Mary is alive body and soul with her Son.interceding for each one of us. Her Assumption is a foretaste of what we too hope to experience: the final resurrection and eternal life in the presence of God.
A sign of hope for all
The Assumption is not only a joy for Mary, but a sign of hope for all humanity.. In her we see God’s promises fulfilled: if Mary, a simple and faithful woman, was glorified, we too are called to holiness and to share in God’s glory.
In a world wounded by uncertainty and despair, the figure of Mary raised to heaven reminds us that faith has a glorious destiny.. That our life has meaning when it is lived with dedication, humility and trust in God.
How to live this solemnity
- Participating in the Eucharist on 15 August, giving thanks for the gift of Mary.
- Praying the Holy Rosary, contemplating the glorious mysteries.
- Offering flowers or a gesture of love in the Marian corner of our home.
- Reflecting as a family on Mary’s role in salvation history.
The Assumption of Mary is an invitation to look to heaven with our feet on the ground. To follow her example of faith, service and trust in the midst of our daily reality. Mary shows us the way and tells us: ‘It is worth believing, hoping and loving’.
